Paolo Nutini premiered his beautiful new track Scream (Funk My Life Up) a couple of weeks ago on Radio 1, and Zane Lowe – quite rightly – made the song the Hottest Record in the World right now. I must admit, it took me a couple of listens to really get into it, just because it was quite unlike anything I’d heard in a while – he howls, HOWLS, on the chorus. Then again, that’s probably a side effect of listening to Beyoncé on repeat everyday. However, when it comes to Paolo – who last released an album 4 and a half years ago – I just can’t resist. It’s all down to that wonderfully growly voice of his, and this song makes it completely worth the wait!
The great thing about Paolo is that he always switches the sound up with every album – there’s always a marked difference – These Streets was angsty folk, and in his own words, Paolo was “struggling to figure out who he was”, Sunny Side Up showed off a happier and jauntier Paolo and finally, the new album Caustic Love – recorded live at Abbey Road Studios – sounds like it will be a bold move for the singer, featuring a brass section (not usually found in the Top 40, so there you go) and the usual gravelly vocals from Paolo who sounds like he’s on top form. Nice to see you back, Mr Nutini!
P.S. You are ridiculously fit, and that had nothing to do with the idea to write this piece, not at all…
Scream (Funk My Life Up) will be released on March 30, with Caustic Love making its debut on April 14.
